Timeless Tea: Her Majesty, the Empress Kitty
China's bubble tea market was producing 15 to 25 new brands every month — most of them lookalikes. Until her Majesty showed up.
The Challenge
A market flooded with new brands, and starved of ones worth remembering
15 to 25 new brands a month. Almost none remembered.
China's appetite for bubble tea seemed insatiable — and the market responded in kind, with a fresh wave of launches arriving every single month. Most newcomers followed one of two well-worn paths: borrow whatever the market leader was doing that season, or wrap a generic cup in stock "cute" graphics and hope it stuck. The result was a category of brands that looked alike, sounded alike, and faded just as quickly. For Rongshi Management, the stakes were doubled. Timeless Tea was built to be a franchise from day one, so the brand had to charm consumers walking past the counter — and stand out to prospective franchisees evaluating new concepts week after week.
The goal
Build an IP the category had never seen — and
make it move franchisees fast
Two ambitions, one brand. First, create an IP no one had built in the category: a brand with genuine personality and style, capable of sparking instant emotional resonance with target demographic. Second, turn that creativity into commercial momentum: a concept compelling enough to generate serious franchisee interest, fast.
Our Insight
The market was flooded with mascots — and starved of characters
the answer had been sitting on the throne the whole time.
Every brand in the category was asking for attention; almost none were earning it. Our research revealed a clear gap: a mascot is decoration — a cute face on a cup — while a character has a name, a world, a temperament, and a story people want to retell. No one in the category was doing true character world-building. Two cultural threads were also waiting to be woven together. In Chinese culture, the cat is a beloved symbol of good fortune — a natural emblem for a brand built on joy and prosperity. And tea itself carries an imperial heritage: for centuries, the finest teas were tribute to the royal court.

The concept
Cats already act like royalty — so we gave one a throne
every cup, poster, and storefront became a new chapter in her story.
Ask any cat owner: cats don't live in your home — you live in theirs. So we made it official, reimagining a cat's life in the ancient imperial court and giving her the title she always believed she deserved: the Empress Kitty. We didn't stop at a title. We built a complete world around her — an era, a palace, a court to preside over, and a personality every cat lover recognizes in a heartbeat: imperious one moment, mischievous the next; playful, endlessly curious, irresistibly cute, and — when the mood strikes — gloriously lazy. Where other brands applied imperial imagery as surface decoration, we built a narrative IP.

“We knew the IP was strong — but honestly, we didn’t expect it to take off this fast. Mocca Design played a huge part in that. They just got what we were going for. Working with them felt less like hiring an agency and more like having another teammate who cared as much as we did.”
